A Community Treasure

The playground quickly became a community treasure; another playground like it did not exist elsewhere on the South Plains. Many a child fought many an imaginary battle in its castle. Sadly, the structure itself was not well suited for the West Texas climate. Constructed primarily of wood, it suffered in the elements. In the early years, there was a fire. Its remote location lent itself to random acts of vandalism. It needed periodic repair and maintenance of varying degrees. A dedicated group of community-minded individuals, the Friends of Legacy Play Village, oversaw the long-term maintenance of the structure, making repairs and coordinating volunteer workdays as necessary. But the wear and tear began to show, on both the structure and on the Friends of Legacy Play Village board members. In 2014, they brought Play By Design consultants back to Lubbock to evaluate the structure and discuss recommendations for repairing, enhancing, and/or reconstructing Legacy Play Village. The report that was generated at that time is included as in the appendices.

Four years later, the Friends of Legacy Play Village board of directors took the necessary steps to recruit and empower a Steering Committee to undertake a complete reconstruction of the Legacy Play Village. Key individuals have been recruited to assume specific roles on the Steering Committee so that all aspects of the project can be managed. This dedicated group of community members has engaged a playground consulting firm, developed a project timeline, constructed a preliminary project budget, contracted with a marketing and brand awareness partner, negotiated a new long-term lease with the City of Lubbock for the land upon which the playground sits, and is now beginning to get down to the “meat and potatoes” of this project.

Our Future

The process of developing and securing everything needed is projected to take approximately 18 months, starting now. The playground will incorporate new schools of thought on community playground design that have developed over the preceding 16 years since the original structure was constructed. It will comply with updates to the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 as it relates to accessibility standards for playgrounds. It will take into consideration the rising interest and research in elder play options. It will address safety issues related to playground surfacing. The new and improved Legacy Play Village is scheduled to be constructed in October 2020.
